We LOVE answering questions about the townsfolk, especially for a LOCAL HOMETOWN DARLING. Thanks for asking!

1.) In addition to Clara, Dez has been in town for around 10 years. Her husband was a long-time Faller who passed away not long after they opened the Dining Room together. Tamara Tan and Kestrel Kraus are newish transplants who moved here at some point in the last five years for work. Everyone else is some variation of Elflock Falls Born n' Bred.

2.) Mayor T-Bone served two years as the town's fluffy mayor before being replaced by Perdita Hull last year. There was a push to have Mayor T-Bone run for a MACUSA senate spot that ultimately fell through because Mayor T-Bone felt she was best serving her community as a mouser at the library. Prior to Mayor T-Bone, Zippy Zebrowski was the town mayor for many years. He served and ran the Zippy Dip at the same time.

3.) Mr. Swint & Doc Potts are the local grumps. Doc Potts vacillates on the local teens and you can earn his favor back quickly by dropping dragots in his shop. Mr. Swint, however, is just a sourpuss. There's also Lir Liu. He's never going to smile at Fred's jokes, but he never smiles at anyone's jokes, so...not much of an indicator.

Eddy and Jupiter serve their sentence together on Friday 9/6 for an hour in Central Classrooms. It's in the late afternoon, after Quidditch tryouts have wrapped, so the only thing they're missing out on is pre-dinner shenanigans. Their jailer that evening is Ms. Altizer, who has them studying in silence.

Ms. Altizer proves a hard nut to crack, and she is unswayed (and undistracted) by tears. If there are any more earnest attempts at a true break out, the liberators are caught with surprisingly eerie ease and welcomed with a brightly wicked Ms. Altizer smile into an extended Friday Evening Detention session for an additional hour. She's just so pleased to spend her Friday with so many of her charges.

THE CAST: Mary Grace O'Malley and Chanel Addams, two girls who cannot decide if they are friends, foes, or flirting.

THE SCENE: After challenging each other on the journals, the two meet up on this rainy day just outside Wildgulch and wind up mud wrestling and hair pulling. No dignity was salvaged, and no winner was determined before a stop was put to it.

THE REQUEST: Which teacher stopped them, what's the punishment, and can they be forced to serve it together?

By the time Chanel makes it to Wildgulch, enough people have poked their noses into the journals that a small crowd has gathered to watch the thrown down between two teen titans. There's just enough time to slip-slide around in the mud outside the Wildgulch door—a good grapple, some hair grabbing—before Dr. Ranui appears at the exit to Wildgulch's cavern, rain-soaked and harried. "Stink one! Addams! O'Malley!"

One bright, loud bang-and-smell from his wand sends the gathered crowd skittering in all directions, and Dr. Ranui wades into the fight himself to split Chanel and Mary Grace apart and has a few high strung but still choice words for each of them about solving these things without fists. No winner is declared and the two brawlers are rewarded with -10 points to each of their houses and detention this Friday to be served with Dr. Ranui.

You'll be cleaning up the pipes and photopiano outside Wildgulch together, so wear clothes you don't mind getting greasy, girls.

Mr. Trullinger greets Wyatt with an ecstatic smile that eases into a more knowing grin as he hears his question. “Asking your teachers is a GREAT way to start!” He commends with his signature enthusiasm. “You know, bowtruckles are VERY shy. And they don’t speak English, so when they need help they don’t always ask for it. They don’t EVER ask for it.” It eventually becomes clear where this story was going: “I was wondering who the culprit that threw our little twiggy friend was. Don’t worry ⁠— DON’T WORRY, Wyatt ⁠— the bowtruckle is alright. Ms. Treetops and I are seeing to his recovery. It seems he and his tree wound up infected with a nasty fungus. Boni was just trying to find someone to help!”

If Wyatt would like, he can accompany Mr. Trullinger, who was just on his way to check up on the wood sprite. Mr. Trullinger and Ms. Treetops walk Wyatt through just what’s wrong with the bowtruckle and he can watch as Mr. Trullinger carefully applies the fungicidal medicine. He then entrusts Wyatt with delivering a sample of the fungus to Wyatt’s boss, Dr. Kraus, at her office at Peck ‘n’ Paw in town. “If you’d like to lend a hand, this would be a GREAT help!”

The Mothgarden seniors are able to sneak the supersized squid into Thorntrail’s common room. It’s even in keeping with the aesthetic! (Sort of!) When they cut it open, the squid spews fluff at an alarming rate, but the engorgio charm placed upon it is quick to run out once the plush cephalopod is split open. There’s enough magical juice in it though to fill the Thorntrail Common Room up to their knees with polyester fluff.

That makes an escape a little difficult! So, tell us who participated and whether or not they ran when things started to get fuzzy, and we’ll give you a roll to see who’s caught! Either way, Jupiter Quigley’s wand is quickly identified as being responsible for the original engorgio charm, and she loses 5 points for Thorntrail for the foolishness.

Revelio and similar spells don't appear to have any effect on the cicada shell, but that's never stopped an intrepid girl detective before! A few of her other tests do return interesting results. In particular:

Running the shell under water turns the hard black cicada husk green, and it takes on a slimy texture, like a river rock covered in moss. Gross.

Subjecting the mystery shell to (a small amount of) fire brings it back to black, and, not only that, if it's possible, the flame makes it even harder than it was before. Hmm. At least the fire stayed small.

Kermit manages to dig up a stylish eyeball belt buckle. The eye blinks very slowly and is unafraid of making eye contact with curious onlookers. Hopefully Timotheye doesn't get jealous.

It must be a theme day in Spellunking today because Trudy finds a different kind of unsettling body horror with dental molds! Why would anyone donate something so useful? Kyle doesn't know, and he'll give her the whole jar for two dragots if she just takes it off his counter, thanks.

At Spellunking, Chanel lays her hand on this taxidermied duck sculpture for a quarter of what it's really worth. Sometimes the ducks will quack or a webbed foot will wiggle, and Kyle wants it as far away from him as you can manage.

Meanwhile, Armani finds something a little less cute, but a good friend all the same. Unlike the ducks, it doesn't seem to have any sentience. Maybe there is a God.

Over at Doc Potts' Downhome Solutions, Chanel is the first to find a hidden treasure, with a carnivorous plant garden sculpture that actually bites. She doesn't manage to rack up another detention yet, though. As long as they don't actually bite someone, she manages to get away with it.

Armani can't leave without this very sad potions bottle that sighs if it goes unused for too long. It's empty (and it keeps sighing about it), but it smells faintly of salt water. Mr. Berzelius spotted the potions bottle immediately, but mostly because he'd seen it at Doc Potts like three days ago, and he lets Armani keep it.

Rounding out their eventful day at Elflock Liquor, Chanel and Armani just barely manage to get out of the store with their identities intact, and a single bottle of Bloodletter Wine in their possession. It was the last bottle in the store, so y'all're gonna have to answer if a cute vampire comes to town before Zed can order more.

While Mr. Stirling assures Trudy and Lionel he's grateful for the offer of assistance, he neither accepts it nor...actually looks like he's grateful for it. That may just be a Stirling thing, though. "Thank you, but it's best that we limit the number of hands fiddling with glyphs to one person for now. Perhaps once the updated is sorted, we can have a look at what went wrong together. Brainstorm ways to prevent it from happening again."

Are the words of a taciturn IT administrator enough to dissuade our intrepid student explorers from poking and prodding where they're told they shouldn't? If Lionel and Trudy would like to take matters into their own hands, tell us a bit about what they try, and we'll let you know how it goes.

All About Locks!

For the Houses: All main entryways for Houses are charmed to open only for students and staff. Any student, regardless of House, may enter any House's Common Area before curfew. After curfew, the main door to a House will only open for staff and students belonging to that House, although a student from another House, or a different guest may be invited inside by a resident. While there is some separation by gender inherent to the floor plan of each dormitory House, nothing magically prohibits students from going anywhere in their own House.

For individual dorms: Student dorms come with manual locks on them, no magical locking beyond a standard resistances to the most basic of opening/unlocking spells is in place, and students are given keys at the start of the year. Students have been known to charm their doors. It's actually quite common, and while school policy is that students must notify staff of any additional mundane or magical locks or protective charms they place on their dorm doors (for safety/liability reasons), many students do not and regularly get away with it without issue. Anyone can theoretically tamper with a door. Doing so magically would be no different than going at it with a lockpicking set. You're breaking and entering, so you're going to get in trouble if you're caught.

From a Mechanical/OOC Standpoint: We will never allow a character to actually break into another student's dorm without the express permission of involved parties. We will also provide a roll to see if the culprit is caught if they desire, or if the offense is particularly chaotic/hard to miss.

Mainly we want to enable scenarios where, for instance, someone's sibling or best friend is constantly bursting into their dorm unannounced, or where students from the same year drop in on each other frequently, if that's a dynamic that has been agreed upon. Peckenpaugh administration is respecting student autonomy and assuming that students will be respectful to each other, but it is within the power of the staff to change things and amp up security if a problem presents.

Hello!

Fred is a regular visitor of Spellunking, but this time she makes sure to visit when Audrey is also working so that they can begin to enact their Grand Plan to Get Fred's Dad Cooler Friends (Who Also Need A Haircut). Fred is here far more on a recon mission to determine if Kyle truly is COOL ENOUGH to befriend her dad. As such, her shopping trip includes a mini interrogation:

"Do you like dogs?" (if no) "Are you ALLERGIC to dogs?"

"Who's your favorite character in The Peculiar Perils?"

"(Wizarding) Wonderwall is the greatest song ever, right?"

"Have you ever met Mama Liu?" (Multitasking!)

Audrey is far more straightforward and asks in a bemusing and blunt manner:

"Who are your friends?" (Just to make him aware that maybe he needs more)

Despite the fact that Kyle seems like he'd rather be doing anything but talking to customers (even hometown darlings), it also seems like a lot of work to move his work station to the back right now. You'd better buy something after all this, what's-your-face.

"Do you like dogs?" (if no) "Are you ALLERGIC to dogs?"
“I have a snake,” he answers, like that’s how you answer a yes or no question. “She’s real good at fetch.” He doesn’t mention if he’s allergic to dogs. But apparently he’s not allergic to snakes.

"Who's your favorite character in The Peculiar Perils?"
“I don’t watch TV.”

"(Wizarding) Wonderwall is the greatest song ever, right?"
Kyle doesn’t answer for a second. Instead, he reaches into the box he’s sorting through and pulls out a plastic yellow (Wizard) See ‘n’ Say toy. He adjusts the direction of the arrow, pulls the string on the side, and waits for the (somewhat warped) voice to say, “And the HIPPOGRIFF says—” before he abruptly cuts it off with:

“No.”

"Have you ever met Mama Liu?"
“Who?” Kyle asks, narrowing his eyes at her. “If that’s someone from your Pernicious Paths or whatever, then obviously not. If that’s some real person,” he sighs, because this is an awful lot of socializing when he could be hiding in the back, sorting intake and taking a nap, and gives an exasperated shrug, “you try asking Jarvis? That guy, like, knows people.”

"Who are your friends?"
Kyle looks Audrey dead in the eyes and doesn’t waste an ounce of emotion when he says, “You’re my only friend.”

Dr. Ranui listens intently to everything Presley has to say, nodding here and there, occasionally stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Well, that's very odd indeed." Is his assessment, although Dr. Ranui's assessments are rarely so brief. This one is no exception. "I've only just recently tended to it. I wonder if it's charmed or perhaps—" Catching himself about to go off on a tangent, he stops and smiles one of his big, reassuring grins. "Thank you, Presley, I'll move up the date for the next service for the device, and I'll walk the grounds after evening curfew checks. See if our culprit doesn't return to the scene of the crime."

Here he pauses before sending Presley on his way, retrieving something from a drawer in his desk. "I trust you to be responsible with this. If it happens again, use this to shut the whole thing off temporarily. Don't lose it. I've only got four copies." He winks as he presses a tiny brass remote control with a single shiny red button into Presley's palm. "And in the meantime, if your sleep is interrupted again, don't hesitate to fetch one of the staff."

If you asked Kyle's mother, she'd say he's the coolest guy in town. This is why you don't ask Kyle's mother. Because the entire time Tony is in Spellunking, Kyle seems to be embroiled in a battle against a Charleston Chew. Maybe a Charleston Wiz-Chew. Either way, it's definitely getting the best of him. This is unfortunate.

When Tony makes his way to the register (possibly with hodgepodge of booty shorts, but definitely with this painting of an absolute unit of a cat if he wants it (and why wouldn't he want it?)), Kyle has clearly lost his battle with the Wizzleston Chew. As they finish their transaction, he looks up at Tony to ask, "Hey, bro... you got any idea how to glue a filling back in?"

Very cool.

Tomorrow, Laszlo and Aris (but definitely not Tybalt!!) are going to try to smoke bomb Wildgulch's common room with Pompium Potion, which will turn everyone's heads into pumpkins (temporarily). Does it work? Do they get in trouble?

If it works I'll probably make a mini IC/OOC for the gourdy chaos.

Imogen's earlier prank set staff on alert this morning, but while Laszlo and Aristotle get some weird glances, they are able to place a magical smoke bomb in Wildgulch's common room (rolled 46 & 66 respectively, needed one roll to surpass 50 for success). Anyone in Wildgulch's common room at the time could potentially have been affected by the smoke bomb (on an opt-in basis, OOC). Healer Greatheart and Mr. Berzelius clear their schedules to reverse the effects for those whose figurative gourds were turned to literal gourds.

It's not too hard to guess at who could be responsible for a Potions-related prank, but Laszlo and Aristotle manage to get away unseen before the smoke bomb goes off (rolled 72 and 98, respectively out of a 70 or greater to get away with it). Ms. G stops by the Deeplurk Common Room on Saturday evening at House curfew. After doing a head count to ensure all students are accounted for, she briefly speaks about how excited she, too, is for the upcoming Quidditch game, but condemns the purposeful use of atomized potions on unsuspecting students. She asks that if anyone in her House is responsible for what happened at Wildgulch, that they stop by her office to speak with her. She doesn't need to hear rumors or hearsay, just honesty from the bomb placers, themselves.

Overnight, a scrubby little patch of moss springs up over the mud where Armani buried his cicada, and there's definitely been some sort of shift in the shell itself. It's softer than it was before. Not quite fragile, but not quite as hard as stone. And when Armani touches it, he gets this feeling. It's faint, and it's kind of like... déjà vu, maybe, though he's not sure why.

Mr. Trullinger's gratitude at having the rambunctious kitten returned gives way to delight at receiving a question. "Oh! GREAT question, Eds. You know, their diet is particularly what these little guys are known for."

Their C&M teacher cradles the kitten in his hands, stroking its head until it opens its mouth in a wide, roar-like yawn. He uses the opportunity to point a few things out. "You see, sharp incisors like a normal cat, but the back teeth are more rounded. Not like a house cat. They're omnivorous! So, they predominantly snack on desert fruits, cacti and other greens. Insects and occasionally small rodents, too. But what they're most known for is their moonshine skills." He wiggles the fingers of his free hand for effect.

"Cactus cats will cut open a cacti and guard it, letting it ferment. That—well, cactus beer they make is like catnip. They LOVE the stuff. Can't. Get. ENOUGH. But, boy, does it get them drunk. So we'll have to keep an eye on this one as it grows." He lifts the kitten to his face and cuddles it, cooing his next words. "Make sure it doesn't decide Ms. Treetops's succulent garden is its own personal microbrewery."

When Merlin returns to Thorntrail to retrieve his shell that evening, he finds a tiny patch of moss has grown over the still somewhat damp soil where he buried it. It must have happened over the course of the day, when no one was watching. Upon unearthing it, Merlin's shell is a little bit softer, and it gives him that faint, fleeting feeling of déjà vu.

If he touches Armani's before its reburial, he won't get quite the same feeling. There's something there, but it's just an echo of a feeling, and it's hard to say if he would have felt it without knowing what to expect.

Okay, let's knock some BUG STUFF off my list!!!

In the wake of Merlin's post and Armani relaying his experience with the Muscheron, Eddy, Chanel, and Freya approached Mr. Trullinger to ask for any insights into their weird treasures. Most of the talking here presumably came from Chanel and Freya while Eddy mostly injected with a few stumbling words when addressed and "weird shit".

They told Trullinger about:

1) The incident with the starlings and presumably asked if that is "Weird Shit" behavior (Freya specifically was meant to ask about this sooner and Josie forgot)
2) Finding the shells on the ground post-starling
3) The results of running the fire/water/earth tests and the day vs night mud test
4) They showed him their three shells - Eddy's was left in his desk untouched, Chanel's was buried in mud (and has been worn as a necklace), Freya's had fire and water applied
5) They tested air with Trullinger there assuming no one has already done that test in the dropbox - blowing on it / Ventus / Hot-air charm. Just want to like. Reduce the number of dropbox incidents here ahhhh.
5a) Ugh, oh. Eddy also mentioned sound at some point. So like. Does it react to music or getting yelled at with Sonorus. (Or cicada sounds but idk where they would get a recording.)
6) Told him about Armani's incident with the stump and the muscheron but omitted Armani's name since he previously said he didn't want to go to Trullinger. Also asked if "thanks you, human spore. return'tzzzlaayy sheshe koreetul" made any sense to him. (Eddy wrote down the transcription of what Armani wrote.)

Mr. Trullinger is unsurprisingly happy to help with a bit of teenage nature sleuthing, looking plum delighted to have his students reaching out to him first. He listens intently as they explain how they found these shells, nodding along. “Well, I do know that starling murmurations are most common in December and January. I guess they probably start as early as October? So your sighting seems early, but not unusually so.” He scratches his beard. “You know, kids, if you’re interested in symbolism and omens related to birds, that’s not really my thing. Dr. Huang almost certainly has some GREAT insights, though!”

Regarding the Appalachian Mushkin, he tries to puzzle through. “Well, Return-tzl-ay, that’s easy verb conjugation - ‘you have returned’ something. Mushkin’s so cool because it's a tonal language! So the rest of it—well, that's a little harder to figure. Did you say sheshe koreetul or SHESHee kor-EE-til? Gosh, guys, I can’t really give you a great answer here, I'm afraid. ‘Something precious’? ‘Fond memory’? It’s hard to say. You know how those Muscheron like to collect things, though.” As they explain the tests they’ve been running, he grows all the more curious. “Sometimes magical seeds and eggs respond to local geography. Do you mind if I have a look?”

“I PROMISE I’m not here to confiscate anything that isn’t dangerous,” he adds with a wink, but when he’s presented with one of the cicada shells his expression turns incredulous. For a beat he just stares, not taking the stone shell, and then breaks out into a grin. “Oh, I get it. It’s a dragon’s egg, right?” He laughs, teasing like he’s just kenned to a joke his students have been playing on him. “Here, let me see, if⁠—”

As he takes the cicada shell between his thumb and forefinger he stops, frozen for a second or two. Then, without warning, gives a whole body shake, right up through his shoulders, like heebie jeebies. Once they’re through he goes right on as though nothing had happened, bringing the stone cicada shell up to his eyes for closer examination. “—you’re really serious I’ll have a look.”

And then, things get weirder. The cicada shell shudders and starts to wail, crying out with a long lazy buzz, like a real cicada, deafeningly loud in such close proximity. But Mr. Trullinger doesn’t flinch as he turns it this way and that. He even shakes the stone and holds it right up to its ear, and though it screams and screams, he seems to hear nothing at all. He keeps stealing glances at the students before him, and the looks on their faces seem to tell him something’s up. Eventually he hands the cicada back and it immediately goes still and silent again once its out of his hands.

“Well, guys, I’m not sure,” he says, doing his best to sound sincere despite looking increasingly skeptical. “I’ll poke through some of my local history books. Ask around and see if anyone knows anything about magical river pebbles, but...it looks to me like you just have...a rock.”

It's hard to pin down just who Malstrom's two quodpot captains are. No one seems to know their names because the roster's not public yet, but there's a host of weird rumors about the BoMB Director's grandchild or a champion thestral rider or that one of them has already been scouted by a pro team.

From what Chanel is able to gather, one of them lives in Elflock Falls and the other somewhere in Ohio. The captain from Elflock Falls is, based on rumor, either someone living up in the hills among the old mansions above town, or possibly close to the bowling alley. Or, maybe it's that he frequently haunts the bowling alley? Or, maybe he's a ghost. Haunting the bowling alley. (See? Weird rumors.) Anyway, most people at the diner are pretty sure his name starts with a C.

Healer Greatheart gives Holland a brown paste to put on her black eye. It should remove the bruising and swelling and take away any pain, but it also smells like burnt hair and she has to keep it on for at least an hour, so it's up to her which is worse. And it's up to you how much suffering she deserves.

Laszlo is able to track down a camera! The one he finds may leave a little to be desired? It depends, really. It's a neon pink monstrosity straight out of the 80s, but it looks like he's getting at least half a roll of film out of it free! There're about sixteen shots left on this twenty-four shot roll.

In addition to his sweet retro camera find, Laszlo spots a very buff cat statue that seems to be his for the taking if he wants it.

Most Peckenpaugh students know through rumors that the party bug is easiest to track down after a heavy rain, but shouting your requests out across Lake Peckenpaugh is said to work.
